SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake City residents can now play a little Beethoven on their strolls downtown.

Ten colorful, upright pianos were being installed in public places Thursday as part of the "Play Me, I'm Yours" public art project.

They'll be officially welcomed with a Friday reception at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, and will be out through June 30.

The project is the brainchild of British artist Luke Jerram, who says he was inspired when he visited a Laundromat and realized none of the patrons were talking to each other.

He thought putting a piano there might break the ice.

Since 2008, Jerram has seen 500 pianos installed in 25 cities around the world.

Organizers say the pianos bring residents together and give them a creative outlet.
